Sinkholes
Created when the roof of an underground cavern collapses, there
are about 200 of these natural geologic wonders in the Alpena area.
The Stevens Twin Sinks, the Bruski Sink, Rockport State Park sinks,
Misery Bay sink (located in the water), and “Mystery Valley”- Sunken
Lake are open for public viewing. In and around the sinkholes you
can discover 400+ million-year-old Devonian Era fossils from when
the Great Lakes region was a prehistoric coral reef. Sinkhole exploration
is “at your own risk” as the walls of these formations are unstable
and steep, keeping a safe distance from the edge is advised. Download
the Sinkhole Adventure Guide from VisitAlpena.com or pick up a
brochure at the Community Development Building to find the sites
for your sinkhole experience.
