North
Rogers City - 38 miles north of Alpena. Known as “The Nautical
City” and home of the annual Nautical Festival, Rogers City
serves up a refreshing escape from the daily grind with its pristine
beaches and stoic streets. Rogers City includes the world’s largest
open pit limestone quarry, Port of Calcite, and is one of the largest
shipping ports on the Great Lakes. Fun fact, during the days
of prohibition Rogers City used to be a hotbed for illegal alcohol
sales due to its lakeside location and proximity to Canada!
Posen - 25 miles north of Alpena. Built from the backbone of
hardworking immigrants from Poland, the Polish constructed
this small agriculture town during the lumbering boom in northern
Michigan and prospered in their native trade, farming, after
the lumbering era died out. Posen is known as the “Potato Capital
of Michigan” due to the abundance of potato farms in the area,
and residents and visitors alike have been celebrating the annual
Posen Potato Festival every September for over 60 years! Posen
isn’t all farming or potatoes though, be sure to check out the historic
Elowsky Grist Mill at Hemlock Hills on Mill Pond for a relaxing
stay, or for your next family event or gathering.
West
Hillman - 23 miles west of Alpena. Formerly known as the
town of Brush Creek in the early 1880’s, this village was named
after land surveyor John Hillman Stevens, and became incorporated
in 1887. Like Alpena, Hillman was also founded on the
booming lumber industry in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. Honoring
heritage and traditions, you’ll find the village of Hillman
celebrating VJ Day (victory over Japan in WW2) every September
2nd, complete with parade and Heritage Day at the historic Brush
Creek Mill. Be sure to check out Brush Creek Mill year-round for
family-friendly events, arts & crafts, and more!
