Believe With Me, an organization that
provides assistance to Gold Star families
– the immediate relatives of members of
line of duty.
“I didn’t know what I was getting into at
the time,” Overstreet said.
As Overstreet learned more about what
McLeod was doing with Believe With
Me, including getting to know the Gold
Star family they were assisting that day,
the deeper he wanted to get involved.
“To be able to help families like these,
who have people in their lives who
have paid the ultimate price, this really
connected with me,” Overstreet said.
“It gave me a little pep in my step.
The cause in general is extremely
motivational.”
Overstreet’s father, Brian, is retired
from the Army, so the military aspect
resonated.
“I wanted to keep it going, so
(Lawson and I) got into the student
ambassadorship,” Overstreet said. “We’re
reaching out to others, to get them
involved, to grow the (Believe With Me)
program.
“There are a lot of Gold Star families in
Base. There is a demand for additional
support.”
This fall Overstreet’s outreach efforts for
Jesuit’s Help Our Heroes club.
The president of the Help Our Heroes
club, , along with
club members
, and ,
joined Overstreet and McLeod in serving
at the Gold Star Gala on December
5. The special event at the Tampa
Museum of Art was a fundraiser for and
celebration of Gold Star families.
Each student worked to help in
preparation, and then was assigned a
family to be their student ambassador
for the night.
“It was a privilege to be a part of and to
support a Gold Star family,” Jack McNulty
said.
“We’re here to support those families,”
Overstreet said. “Seeing these families
and what they go through, I need to help
them.”
