Local Lore Insider Tips from Karen Keene Braswell, Island Artist
“Painting is breathing,” says Karen Keene
Braswell. As one of the Golden Isles’ most
beloved plein air artists Karen paints all
her local and regional landmarks on
location. Look for her painting the
fishermen and crabbers at The Pier!
My favorite place to paint: That’s easy. There
is nothing like painting on the SS Pier. In the
summer, it's an absolute necessity.
You have to go: beach walking an hour before
sunset at low tide on East Beach. I never tire of
it. It's different every year. But if the beach is
not your thing, walking around the cemetery
and grounds at Christ Church is just as Magical.
Only on St. Simons: will you experience the
beautiful canopy on Frederica Road.
It’s worth a day trip: to go to Darien north or
visit Jekyll Island’s Turtle Center and take a
walk on Driftwood Beach. If time permits, a day
trip by boat to LSSI or Cumberland Island.
The best way to relive history: Taking a
trolley tour is an absolute must. There is so
much history here. Catch a reenactment at Fort
Frederica if you have the opportunity.
Karen’s watercolors, limited
edition reproduction prints
