Quality Healthcare for
Currituck County
Quality healthcare is available to all of Currituck County’s residents
and visitors through medical practices located throughout the
county and the surrounding areas.
Three hospitals serve the county: Sentara Albemarle Medical
Center in Elizabeth City, Chesapeake General Hospital in
Chesapeake, Virginia, and The Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head.
Additional access to medical care is available in other cities of
southeast Hampton Roads (Virginia) as well as Greenville, NC.
In addition to the services offered at the nearby hospitals, Sentara
Albemarle Medical Center offers medical services on the Outer
Banks through Sentara Kitty Hawk. The main branch, which also
provides emergency care, is in Kitty Hawk. The Outer Banks
Hospital offers an Urgent Care Center, located at The MarketPlace
in Southern Shores (MP 1). On the northern end of the Currituck
mainland there is Currituck Internal Medicine & Family Practice.
Albemarle Regional Health Services (ARHS), the regional public
health agency, administers the county’s health department
located in the Governmental Complex in Currituck, with health
services offered to all county residents and visitors. ARHS has
served Currituck County since 1995. ARHS provides Children’s
Developmental Services Agency, Environmental Health Services,
Clinical Services including Maternal, Child, and Women’s
Preventive Health, Communicable Disease Services, Inter-County
Public Transportation-ICPTA, Public Health Preparedness and
Response, and Health Education as well as community health
outreach programming.
Medical Services of America has recently acquired Albemarle
Home Care. Albemarle Home Care has been providing nursing,
physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and nurse
aide services in the homes of Currituck County residents for over
40 years. Albemarle Hospice, since 1992, continues to provide
hospice services in the homes and nursing homes through a team
approach which includes the patient/family, physicians, nurses,
nurse aides, social worker, chaplain and volunteers. Albemarle
Home Care and Albemarle Hospice provide the highest quality
of care and are accredited by the Accreditation Commission
for Home Care. The adult day health care center, DayBreak, is
located in Elizabeth City, NC and welcomes residents of Currituck
County to utilize this progressive alternative care to those needing
24-hour supervision or assistance due to frail medical conditions.
Transportation to the Center and throughout Currituck is available
through the ICPTA.
The Currituck House, located 1 mile South of the Virginia border
in Moyock, is a new and modern 90-bed Assisted Living facility
which also includes a secure 48-bed Memory Care unit. The facility
is designed and staffed 24-hours a day to care for older adults
who have physical or memory impairment and need assistance
with personal care, medication administration and other life needs
provided in a safe and secure environment.
Skilled nursing services and long-term care are provided to
Currituck County at the Sentara Nursing Center in Barco, (252)
457-0500. The 100-bed facility has been serving the Currituck
community since 1988. It offers 25 beds reserved for residents
in need of skilled nursing care or therapy services, including
physical, occupational and speech therapies. The facility has 75
beds designated for long-term care, for those residents who need
assistance with activities of daily living. In addition to around-theclock
care, Sentara Nursing Center also offers outpatient physical,
occupational and speech therapy services at the Currituck Family
YMCA.
