through the Old Testament chronologically hitting major
events on a timeline.
When I mention Moses, I’ve had students 16 years old
and older who don’t have any idea who I’m talking about.
If I ask if they’ve seen the movie Prince of Egypt, they’ve
told me that they thought the Moses character was made
up by Disney. Some have never heard the creation story or
Noah’s ark. We have high school students in our own town
who have never heard the story of David and Goliath.
In addition to the Bible, I use Dave Ramsey’s course
called “Foundations in Personal Finance” for the Biblical
Finances & Life Skills. Although some schools require
a senior economics course, very few schools in Georgia
require a personal finance class to graduate. I have juniors
and seniors who don’t know the difference between a
checking and savings account, how to fill out a check, or
the trouble they can get into with credit cards.
TCM: WHAT SCHOOLS OFFER YOUR COURSES AND HOW
MANY STUDENTS DO YOU HAVE ON AVERAGE?
GADY: I’ve been teaching students at Montgomery High
School since spring 2014 and Vidalia High School students
since spring 2015. I begin my first course at Toombs
County High in January 2018. On average, the classes
range from 10 to 15 students each semester.
TCM: WHERE ARE CLASSES HELD?
GADY: Montgomery County High School classes meet on
Brewton-Parker’s campus. Vidalia High School meets at
Tabernacle Baptist Church. We’re still working out the
details for the Toombs County High School class.
TCM: IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU FEEL THESE COURSES HAVE
MADE AN IMPACT ON STUDENTS’ LIVES?
GADY: For me, it’s about the discipleship process. Last
year, I had eight students in one class give their lives to
Jesus.
On any given graduation night, there are 500 or
so graduating from Vidalia, Toombs, and Montgomery
counties. This past May marked my first four-year cycle of
teaching at Montgomery County. One out of eight students
that walked across the stage had been in one of my
classes. Ten percent of the graduating class last year from
Montgomery County got saved over those four years in my
class.
If 20% have had a little bit of Bible by graduation in all
three schools, we’re putting out about a hundred students
that are literate in the Bible and in personal finances
from a Biblical worldview. Wherever these kids go, they
will go equipped. Imagine what Toombs and Montgomery
counties would look like saturated with students that start
families equipped with biblical knowledge and practical
everyday living according to the Bible. I think it’s a game
changer. TCM
