It was all part of the school-wide fundraising effort for the benefi ciaries of Mission Drive 2017, the children of Belle Glade and their local parish, St. Philip Benizi. All totaled, the Jesuit students raised more than $10,000. Belle Glade, an impoverished, crime-ridden community on the southern edge of Lake Okeechobee, is visited several times annually by the Jesuit service club Agmen Christi, and Matthew Brink ’17, who has traveled to Belle Glade three times, launched the Mission Drive at Convocation in late March. Brink described the need for support in the town of 18,000 with a large migrant population. “Anything we can donate will go to help them Brink said. Weekly homeroom collections were supplemented by Mission Drive Day funds generated via small fees associated with participation in video game competitions, ultimate frisbee, bocce, basketball, and much more, as well as food sales. Math teacher April Bombka generated $1,000 in food sales during the drive. The Mission Drive dates back to the 1930s at Jesuit, and Mission Drive Day kicked off as it always does, with a fabulous music concert led by music director Nina Wegmann. The day concluded with the student-faculty basketball game. Tied after regulation and overtime, a 3-point contest determined the outcome, and Steve Matesich ’91, Jesuit’s Admissions Director, swished the winning attempt to lift the faculty to victory.
