In 1925, the doors of the Manatee River Hotel (aka
Pink Palace) opened. It was considered to be the
“Ritzy playground for the roaring 20’s”. It brought in
such famous people as Greta Garbo, Babe Ruth and
President Herbert Hoover. It’s also rumored that Al
Capone stayed there. There was someone saying
they found a ledger book and handgun in the wall
of hotel with Al Capone’s name and the letters AC
on the handgun but no one would bring it forward
for anyone to see. After some checking I found out
that Al never signed his own name and most times
someone else signed him in under a different name.
As for the gun I really can’t see Al Capone putting
A C on his guns.
However Al Capone was known in the area. He and
his friends would hangout at a dance hall on Anna

Maria, and some have reported seeing Al Capone
in the elevator of the Hampton Inn. He may have
stayed there on one of his many trips to Bradenton.
In March 1966, the hotel closed up and reopened
the same month renamed the River Hotel Senior
Home. In August of 1966, the hotel closed again
and sat empty until 1993 when it opened as The
Riverpark Residence Hotel/Senior Vacation Center.
It was reported that the activity in the building was
crazy. Children were heard running up and down
the hall when no children were in the building, latenight
music from a band could be heard playing,
towels and bedding were thrown all over in the linen
storage room and the dishes in the dishwasher
would come out upside down after being loaded
