Stopping to let a gopher tortoise cross
the street, driving by a group of wild
pigs on a busy road, watching dozens
of pelicans in a feeding frenzy as dolphins swim
offshore...these are just a few of the scenes you
can expect to encounter in the Englewood area.
A variety of birds and animals call
Englewood home, all or part of the year. They
are a source of fascination and entertainment to
residents and visitors. This is a place where you
can see bald eagles soaring in the morning sky
and a bobcat in your neighbor’s yard at dusk.
AQUATIC LIFE
SEA TURTLES
The loggerhead sea turtle weighs between
155 and 375 pounds and averages about
three feet in length. Ninety percent of the
nests found in the U.S. are in Florida and
the Englewood area is a particularly popular
nesting spot. Sea turtle nesting season runs
from May 1 to October 31 when female
loggerheads lumber up on shore and lay
their eggs in the sand before returning to the
water. Sea Turtle Patrol volunteers mark and
track the nests with yellow wooden stakes
and neon tape. When the nest hatches, the
hatchlings crawl to the water. The Coastal
Sea grapes
Loggerhead sea turtles are one of
three species that lay eggs on the
sandy shores of the Gulf Coast.
