Make the soap switch
When Melissa Brown
started making soap as a hobby
back in early 2016, little did
she know she was about to
unlock the key to her passion that would result in starting
her own company. After spending long days at her desk as a
medical transcriptionist, she couldn’t wait to be done for the
day so she could try out a new soap recipe.
“I became addicted to making soap and seeing how it
turned out each time I made a new loaf.”
That “addiction” soon turned into a mission. The more she
learned about ingredients that go into making true soap, and
started comparing
and researching ingredients
in commercially
made
products, the more
she knew she had
to educate people
that what they
think is soap, is not
real.
“Even though the
aisle may be labeled as
“soap” at the grocery or
big box store, some of
the biggest brands out
there are not really soap
are actually detergent
bars. You can easily tell
because the word ‘soap’
will not be on the packaging.
Most people are
shocked when I point
this out to them.”
Melissa uses ingredients that most people cook food with.
She uses olive oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter and other food or
cosmetic grade ingredients. Using the cold process method,
the oils and butters are melted down and mixed with a water
and sodium hydroxide (lye) solution. Mixing these ingredients
(in precise weights/measurements) results in the compound
known as soap. Once the soap is made, it can then be
