South
Harrisville - 32 miles south of Alpena. First named Davison’s
Mill after Crosier Davison when he purchased land and water
rights here in 1854, Davison’s Mill was later bought out by Benjamin
Harris and his sons and was aptly named Harrisville. Well
known for its formidable annual arts & crafts show, Harrisville
Harmony Weekend, Harrisville is a gem residing on the shores of
Lake Huron. There are several attractions in the Harrisville area
that you will not want to miss. Visit the Cape Cod style Sturgeon
Point Lighthouse, where you will find the Marine City shipwreck
lying just 1 mile north of this historic lighthouse in only 5 feet of
water. Not far from the lighthouse grounds, you will also stumble
upon the old Bailey Schoolhouse, one of few remaining one-room
log schoolhouses still standing in Michigan.
East
Lake Huron. What is east of Alpena? Lake Huron! That’s right,
there are no city dwellings east of Alpena, but that doesn’t mean
you won’t enjoy a trip to the east to adventure around this Great
Lake. Fish this world famous fishing location; Or, sail, snorkel,
dive, swim, paddle board, or kayak your way around this freshwater
sea and explore shipwrecks that lie beneath you in the protected
waters of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
