It’s not enough to assume teens and parents are communicating about these critical issues and the consequences of choices. “When they’re not communicating,” said Bess, “teens get whatever information they have from their peers and television. Out of 159 counties, we rank fifth in the state for sexually-transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy amongst children ages 11-19. We have positive HIV results that include teens more often than we should.” Knowledge, not ignorance, equips and empowers our children to make informed choices. Regardless of school choice, race, gender, social or economic position, every child will be challenged to make choices that could be detrimental to his or her life. Every good parent wants to protect his or her child from anything that would hurt them, which often conflicts with the fact that most teenagers have a deep driving desire for something they mistakenly define as freedom.
