A devastating illness such as cancer can take a toll on families in many ways. Not only can it be mentally and physically challenging, but many times it puts families in financial straits as well. There are lots of stories about people who worked hard to build lives, make homes and save money only to have it all wiped out nearly overnight when faced with treatment costs associated with cancer. Many times, people facing this issue are left with feelings of despair and confusion, not knowing where to turn for help or even if there is help available. For Harnett County residents in this predicament there is some good news. “Friends Fighting Cancer” is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing help to families of cancer patients who have unmet needs. With money raised through page Friends Fighting Cancer By Rick Myers donations and fund-raisers throughout the year, Friends Fighting Cancer can offer financial assistance to Harnett County and surrounding counties for residents with these needs. Friends Fighting Cancer can assist patients with such things as medication assistance, mortgage or rent, utility payments and transportation needs. Referrals for services are received from local churches, business people, hospitals, cancer centers and other places as well. Originally, Friends Fighting Cancer was formed in the early 2000’s. However, in 2014 several members of this group worked through the process necessary to form a not for profit corporation with 501(c)(3) tax status called Friends Fighting Cancer. Friends Fighting Cancer was established to continue the important work with the same spirit of services as the forerunner organization. 54
