Caladesi Island Caladesi Island is one of the few natural barrier islands on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Originally, it was inhabited by the indigenous Tocobaga and was used as a fishing and hunting camp-over by European soldiers and settlers for centuries. In 1888 a Swiss immigrant, Henry Scharrer, established a homestead on the island. His daughter, Myrtle, was born and grew up here and many years later penned “Yesteryear, I Lived in Paradise,” a loving memoir of life on a Florida barrier island. In 1967 Caladesi Island was established as a State Park. It has a beautiful natural white sandy shoreline. The State Park has 3 miles of nature trails, a marina, picnic pavilions, bathhouses and a park concession. Activities include hiking, fishing, shelling, boating, and nature studies. In 2008, “Dr Beach” named Caladesi Island America’s Best Beach. Caladesi Island shares its island geography with Clearwater Beach, which was voted Best Beach in Florida in 2013 by USA Today! You are surrounded by two of the top beaches in the United States! So enjoy, get back to nature.
