she was going to get to Ft. Lauderdale every weekend for classes. The University suggested that she contact two women in Waycross, teachers at Okefenokee Tech, who were also making the drive. “My friends were concerned. They told me it was too much.” But once again, Bernice would not be dissuaded. She left work at lunch on Fridays and met the two women in Waycross. “We’d drive to Tampa and have class that night until about 10:00 and then stay in a hotel.” Classes continued all day Saturday and Sunday, and Bernice was back at work on Monday morning. “It was a great time, but it was a lot of work.” In 2006, Bernice received her Master of Arts in Professional Counseling and Psychology and certification from the National Board for Certified Counselors (NCC) for a total of five degrees. She was also board certified as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
