I was rocking back and forth and thinking ‘Oh my God. I’m not going to be able to do this.’” In a book called Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck, Fred said, “Dweck describes the difference between a ‘growth mindset’ and a ‘fixed mindset. The fixed mindset says this is the way it’s been, this is the way it is now, therefore it will always be this way no matter what I do. The growth mindset says this is the way it’s been, it’s like this now, but I can change it based on my efforts. I can play a part in this,” he said. By the time they got to Athens, Fred had chosen a new perspective. “My grandmother kept other people’s babies while they worked at industries or went to the produce field. I had to help wash those diapers. They were not pampers. And I had to help change those cloth diapers. I realized that from the waist up, this kid was twelve. But from the waist down, he was a baby.
