you’re here,’ it’s so worth it. I try to make every track meet I can.” When Jack’s teacher returned to her class, Mandy got a call from the school. A second grade teaching position was available. Was she interested? “I said, ‘Absolutely.’” A week later, she was teaching her own second grade class at Sally D. Meadows. “I truly feel called to give back,” said Mandy. “I can relate to the student athletes. I have been in their shoes both mentally and physically and can motivate and encourage them. It has been an honor to be there on the track for each and every athlete….There is always the flip side, dealing with injuries while encouraging athletes to stay mentally tough and persevere and overcome.” For example, she said, “Nate McBride has handled his obstacles this season with such grace and dignity….He is still at the top, shining brightly. His future is amazing! I also have two hurdlers and a high jumper that have come so far in one year. They have absolutely blown me away with their hard work, dedication, and progress.” For several years, Mandy competed in Sprint Triathlons. “But I just don’t have time with teaching, coaching and being a wife and mother of three.” And yet, she continues to run about 20 miles or more a week. “I just run for a little fitness and peace of mind,” she said. Maybe it’s not the future Mandy imagined all those years ago running along the beach in Guam.
