It honors the 147 county residents who lost their lives. The overlook, from which Ground Zero is visible, has always been a special place to view Sandy Hook Bay, the New York skyline and events. The park’s Pine Creek Railroad, established in 1960, is the only live steam, narrow-gauge train ride in New Jersey. Historic Allaire Village, also situated within the park, was the site of a bog iron furnace and forge that date back to the late 1700s. Living history demonstrations and events are presented in many of the village buildings. The site is home of InfoAge: A Science/History Learning Center and Museum, the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame, the NJ Antique Radio Club Museum, and a WWII Living Memorial. Today visitors enjoy historic exhibits related to 19th-century farming and history. Crosswicks Creek Greenway encompasses the 36-acre historic district and an additional 1,000 acres. Located in the historic Levi Solomon Barn, the nonprofit museum highlights the county’s rich and diverse Jewish heritage through exhibits, programs and publications. On this working farm, historical interpreters in period dress plow the fields, feed the animals and keep the 14-room farmhouse as it was in the 1890s. NEW JERSEY WOMEN’S HERITAGE TRAIL Historic sites tell the collective story of a few of the famous and lesserknown women who contributed to the agricultural, industrial, labor and domestic history of the state. Ten sites in Monmouth County are points on the trail, including Sandy Hook Lighthouse, Fort Hancock Barracks #25, Keyport Historical Society, Historic Walnford, the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, Thompson Park at Brookdale Farm, and Monmouth Battlefield State Park. ROOSEVELT BOROUGH D9 Borough Hall, 33 North Rochdale Ave., Roosevelt 609-448-0539 www.web2sons.org This borough was established in 1937 as a utopian cooperative farming and industrial community. Most of the homes are flat-roofed concrete Bauhaus-inspired structures designed by architect Louis Kahn. The elementary school is the site of a large mural painted by artist and resident, the late Ben Shahn. STEPHEN CRANE HOUSE P9 508 Fourth Ave., Asbury Park 732-775-7676 www.thestephencranehouse.org Stephen Crane, the famed author of The Red Badge of Courage, as well as other novels, poetry, short stories and newspaper articles, lived here for several years. Since 1995 it has served as a venue for literary, musical and other cultural programs. Open for events only. TOWNSHIP OF OCEAN HISTORICAL MUSEUM P8 703 Deal Rd., Ocean 732-531-2136 www.oceanmuseum.org The museum occupies the 18thcentury Eden Woolley House, a Greek Revival style architectural gem and repository of 250 years of local historical artifacts. It offers cultural, historical and academic events as well as historical exhibits. In 2009, it was voted Best Museum in Monmouth County by readers of the Asbury Park Press. It was erected in 1930 on the foundation of President Woodrow Wilson’s “Summer White House” at a cost of $10.5 million.
