Located on the corner of East Water Street and Hooper Avenue, the museum occupies three buildings: the 1868 carriage house of Joseph Francis (inventor of the Life Car), which houses nautical artifacts, Ship Store, maritime library and administration; the Joseph Lappin Restoration Shop; and the A-cat building, where you’ll find a beautiful collection of historic wooden boats. A visit to the museum will bring you through a historically rich self-guided tour of a collection of over thirty boats from the Barnegat Bay/Toms River area. The museum is also home to a large selection of antique boating hardware and equipment as well as historic photos and paintings of local nautical images. Explore the importance of the “sneakbox,” a type of boat used exclusively in Barnegat Bay to navigate the shallow waters for hunting and fishing. Stop in and visit us! The Seaport Society hosts a variety of events throughout the season. Don’t miss the 40th Annual Wooden Boat Show held in July in downtown Toms River. The festival celebrates classic and antique boats, pirate culture, maritime artisans, food and music. Children are invited to a model-boat-building class where they will try out their constructions’ seaworthiness.
