Elizabeth Nieto, Amazon’s Head of Global Diversity,
Dear friends, I hope you and your family are well. The battle against the
pandemic continues all over the world but our response doesn’t seem to
be controlling its propagation. We find ourselves strategizing possible
responses but we are definitely not getting the kind of information that we can trust.
It seems that every time we think we are coming to the end of the pandemic we get
pulled back and we find ourselves facing the same challenges all over again. The
impact COVID-19 is having on all of us and every aspect of our lives is truly
staggering. One thing is certain, our world and life have been changed forever. We
continue to adjust, improvise, and follow the latest information and advice that comes
from our nation’s leadership. But will this be enough to recover? We hope so.
We also know we will not be able to make it alone. We hope our partnerships
will endure and together we can rebuild the devastation that we have been
subjected to. The massive layoffs that are taking place all over corporate America
are truly frightening. The hospitality industry, restaurants, the entertainment
industry, you name it they are all in survival mode, and for the individuals that is truly
frightening. Since March of this year, we have been following how the corporations
are reacting to the uncertainty and it is not pretty. Finally, there are at least three
versions of a vaccine that supposedly will immunize us against the virus. We hope
with all our heart that we finally are on a firm road to succeed in defeating this
challenge.
In the meantime, Latinas continue to battle the challenges of the day. Our
stories in this issue explore how corporations are adjusting. We found that at
Toyota’s San Antonio, Texas plant there is a resilient group of Latinas making a
significant impact on the survival of the company. We hope you find their stories
inspirational and gives you a sense of light at the end of the tunnel.
At the other end, there is the giant Amazon who seems to have prepared for all
the challenges that we face today. The company continues to grow, continues to
“gobble up” all kinds of companies that enhance their competitive advantage
and their financial position continues to strengthen. Amazingly the Latino leader of
this giant, Jeff Bezos, has taken an aggressive strategy to implement diversity
throughout the ranks, and that a Latina leader, Elizabeth Nieto is the head of their
Global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Elizabeth is a leader who has excelled
everywhere she has worked, and her support for our community is unquestioned.
By the time you receive this magazine we think we will have a new president and a
new administration. We shall see. We will explore what is to come in our next issue,
until then please stay safe and healthy.
