St. Simons Land Trust Outdoor Classrooms
On the lookout for ways to entice those visiting (or the newly
home-schooled) kiddos outside? Look no further than The St.
Simons Land Trust’s Outdoor Classrooms, a cunning introduction
for budding naturalists to learn about birds, plants and flowers.
Beginning with backyard birds that might be outside the window
right now, the scavenger-hunt approach encourages exploration of
beaches, marshes, preserves and nature trails in person at Land
Trust protected areas, like Guale Preserve, Frederica Park and the
John Gilbert Nature and Alice Richards Botanical trails or virtually
via the Land Trust’s web site. Participants check off bird, plant and
tree species while building budding relationships with Land Trust
goals like: Take only pictures, leave only footprints. No one is left
out, as adventurers ages five and older or six and under have dedicated
work sheets that can be downloaded from sslt.org. Everyone
is encouraged to share photos by email (info@sslt.org) or social
media (@stsimonslandtrust).
