a note from the publishers
Every day in the US an average of 10,000 people turn
65 and one in every three adults over the age of 65
will require some type of short or long term care.
Given the fact that nearly 35% of Polk County’s population
is seniors, this is a really big deal! Choosing care for yourself
or a loved one is a daunting task. Our family faced this more
than twenty-eight years ago when Wes’ grandmother, Mabel,
who was suffering from Alzheimer’s, needed more care than

could be given at home. Overwhelmed and a bit scared, the
family embarked on a search for information and care. At a time when Google didn’t exist and
the internet was in its infancy, this was no easy task. We learned some important things in that
process and did, indeed, find good care for Mabel. We realized that other families were struggling
with the same lack of information and guidance as we had and decided to do something about it.
For twenty-six years, Polk ElderCare Guide has been filling the gap. Designed with Polk families
in mind, it was created not only to lead people to good resources, but give them the tools and
education necessary to make quality choices about senior living and care options for themselves
or loved ones. The Polk ElderCare Guide, now also available in Spanish, is your tool for wading
through the maze of elder care options and resources in Polk County. It is our sincere hope that
this guide will make the information gathering process easier and less stressful for you.
