SPORTS
RACE OF CHAMPIONS
St. Pete is a sought-after location
for runners, from the St. Anthony’s
Triathlon that brings athletes from all
the world for a bike-swim-run event,
to the dozens of 5K and 10K fundraisers
that support worthy causes. But
none is as dramatic as the Sunshine
Skyway 10K Bridge Run in March that
raises funds for the Armed Forces
Families Foundation. Last year 7,500
participated in the race that temporarily
closes early morning traffic on
the northbound side of the bridge,
giving runners a chance to catch
amazing scenic views, especially
as the sun rises over Tampa Bay.
ADRENALINE RUSH
For something a little more unusual
try indoor rock climbing at Vertical
Ventures, or take a class in the aerial
arts, including acro yoga and sling
at the Movement Sanctuary. The St.
Pete Skatepark, Florida’s largest free
public Skatepark,
is open to all skill
levels and has a 12
ft. deep bowl, street
court and snake run.
Take a kiteboarding
lesson from SA
KiteSurf Adventures
at the North
Sunshine Skyway
recreational area.
LOVE THE WATER
If you love water
sports, St. Pete
has you covered.
Rent jet skis and
electric boats from
Bada Bing Water
Sports at the downtown St. Pete
Municipal Marina and cruise around
Tampa Bay. Take a guided cruise to
look for dolphins or visit offshore
islands to look for shells. Kayak
through Weedon Island Preserve.
Book a deep sea cruise to catch big
game fish in the Gulf of Mexico.
Or join the crowds at the Skyway
Fishing Pier, a designated Florida
State Park and an ideal location for
fishing just south of downtown.
Miles of white sandy beaches along
the Gulf coast offer a chance to swim
in the turquoise waters of the Gulf
of Mexico. Or, during the season,
swim at one the city’s eight municipal
pool at local recreation centers.
The North Shore Aquatic Complex is
open year and features a 50-meter
pool with diving board, 25-meter
training pool with zero-depth entry
and a play pool for children.
