GRAND CENTRAL DISTRICT
The Grand Central District extends
from the 1600 block of Central
Avenue to 31st Street and has a definite
eclectic quirky flair. It’s the “place
where the locals go” for great food,
entertainment and shopping. Small
art galleries, craft breweries, sidewalk
cafes, fitness centers and clubs,
including several LGBT bars, are
found here. The district is also home
to new hotels, the Imagine Museum
showcasing contemporary glass art,
and Haslam’s, a landmark family
owned bookstore since the 1940s.
WAREHOUSE ARTS DISTRICT
The Warehouse Arts District is a
former industrial part of town that
is now an emerging neighborhood
of working artists, small businesses
and creative entrepreneurs. The
district is located south of Central
Avenue between 16th and 31st
Street. During the Second Saturday
Art Walk, take the trolley to this district
to visit the Morean Center for
Clay at the Historic Train Station; the
ArtsXchange, a center for emerging
artists; the Duncan McClellan
Glass Studio; and Zen Glass, among
others. In addition, the St. Petersburg
Opera Company is headquartered
here, and so is Creative Clay, an arts
center for people with disabilities.
Don’t miss a visit to many of the city’s
craft breweries and craft distilleries.
Cage Brewing, 3 Daughters Brewing,
Pinellas Ale Works, Kozuba & Sons
Distillery and St. Petersburg Distillery
are among the venues in this district.
THE DEUCES
The Deuces is an historic main street
district that was at one time the
center of the city’s African-American
culture during the era of segregation.
Located at 22nd Street South,
the neighborhood has several
restored landmarks, including Mercy
Hospital and the Manhattan Casino,
an entertainment hall that hosted
legendary jazz musicians including
Duke Ellington and Louie Armstrong,
and is now a restaurant. Visit the
Dr. Carter G. Woodson Museum
showcasing both African American
art and the area’s history. The
Florida Orchestra performs Sunday
afternoon chamber concerts at the
museum from January through April.
