CHAPTER ONE

I n 1631, Mumtaz Mahal died in Burhanpur. Today,
the city is in India. Then, it belonged to the powerful
emperor Shah Jahan. He and Mumtaz adored each
other. Mumtaz served as one of her husband’s most
trusted advisors. They had 14 children together. They
rarely spent time apart. Even when Shah Jahan went to
war, he insisted Mumtaz come with him.
After her death, Shah Jahan left his throne to grieve.
Stories said he returned months later with white hair.
Shah Jahan wanted to honor his beloved Mumtaz. In
1632, work began on a spectacular building. Thousands
of workers joined artists from many nations on the
project. White marble covered the outside. Carvings
dotted with precious stones filled the inside. The
building, known as the Taj Mahal, remains one of the
world’s most beautiful structures. People around the
world consider it a symbol of the power of love.
What is love? Philosophers, or thinkers
who study ideas, wrestled with the question
thousands of years ago. Human beings have
asked it every day since then. Artists paint,
dance, and write songs in search of an answer.
Researchers scan the brains of people to see if
science can explain love.
Two professors, William R. Jankowiak and
Edward F. Fischer, looked at stories told by
people from all over the world. Over 90
percent of the cultures they studied told
stories about love. Like language and music,
love seems to be universal.
Where love is,
no room is too small.
