worried about the possibility of going to war with another
country, but now think about that on a very simplistic chain
of thought for a child. What does war mean to a child? Does
that mean bombs or does that mean guns?” She tries to help
them come to grips with the things that are bothering them.
Her other specialty, working with the LGBTQ community
is very different. “One of the biggest issues has been people
in the transgender community looking for somebody to provide
pathways so they could get their letter to move forward
with body surgeries,” Palmer said. “I’m doing some work
with PFLAG on that.”
What I’m there to do is to lend them support and help
them achieve goals,” Palmer continued. “This session with

to have body surgery.
Other problems with the LGBTQ community are pretty
standard to Palmer. “The problems they have are just the
same as any straight person or straight couple, it’s just that I
am the type of person who understands a little bit more about
their lifestyle and situation and the issues that they face and
I’m able to meet those needs without judgment,” she said.
“One of the other things that I do is work with communities
of people who are part of diverse religions,” Palmer
added. “I work with people that are Islamic, Muslim, Buddhist,
Wiccan, Pagan. There’s a lot of diversity in the Tampa
Bay area and they don’t have a lot of people that understand
them. I try to be a resource for diversity.”
Animal therapy is also a part of her humanistic approach.
Currently she used a Welsh Corgi named Zelda. “She’s a beginner
so she’s still learning herself,” Palmer said. “I used to
use pet rats, the kind you get at a pet store. They are as intelligent
as a dog, they like people and they are a very good
size for children. The only issue I ran into was that they only
live for about three years so after three years of training the
rat would be in a situation where they would have to retire
because they were old and frail. They are better than hamsters
in the fact that they hamsters want to be by themselves and
rats want to be with people. If they lived longer I’d still be
using them.”
Palmer begins by meeting with clients for sessions once a
week for four weeks. “This is so I can build rapport with the
client and they can build rapport with me and we can come
up with strategies to deal with the issue that they brought in
with them,” she said.
