“The lovely flowers
embarrass me,
They make me regret
I am not a bee.”
– Emily Dickenson
Spider Lily
(Hymenocallis latifolia)
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Also known as mangrove spider lily, swamp
lily, bog lily and southern spider lily, these
flowers bloom in the summer and last for a
few weeks. They are a bog plant and thrive in
moist soil and up to one inch of water.
Although they are both members of the
Amaryllidaceae family, the spider lily
(Hymenocallis latifolia), which is always white,
shouldn't be confused with Lycoris radiata,
commonly known as the red spider lily.
