West U favorite Cleburne Cafeteria
is up-and-running (and a tad upscale)
Seventeen months after it was left
in ashes — for the second time in
its 75-year history — Cleburne Cafeteria
rose again last month.
The completely rebuilt digs at 3606
Bissonnet St. boast an expansive marble
entryway, wider area to queue up for the
food line, larger dining room and private
area, beer on tap, wine, an ATM machine (although credit cards
the door with valet parking, and a larger, repaved parking lot.
Also visible — admit it, you looked, too — a state-of-the-art
smoke alarm and sprinkler system.
Still the same — the fresh ingredients prepared from scratch,
servers and attendants garbed in tidy, retro black and white
uniforms, and the energetic presence of owner George Mickelis,
whose younger visage beams from black-and-white photos with
his dad, Nick, in earlier versions of Cleburne.
Those, combined with the prominently displayed, restored oil
paintings of his beloved Greece done from memory by the late
Nick Mickelis, give the place an even stronger sense of history
and family than before.
be “guinea pigs” several days before his formal re-opening on
Nov. 17, and soon there were lines every day for the “soft” open.
Because things weren’t quite perfect just yet, the lunches and
dinners were free, hundreds of them. Mickelis said the customers
were doing him the favor.

Turns out Cleburne’s customers love a good story of resilience
as much as they appreciate a steaming side of baked squash,
gooey serving of mac-and-cheese, and an inches-high slice of
lemon meringue pie.
