Isaac Watts (1674-1748) is known as the “Father of English Hymnody” and in addition to
well-known hymns like Joy to the World, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, At the Cross
and many other timeless pieces, he also set the entire book of Psalms to music. Interestingly,
early hymnals did not include musical notation, but only the words of the hymn. The melodies
came from already known songs, or from a cantor who sang the tune in the congregation.
