to build using slave labor and local
craftsmen.
“Gamble was an aristocrat,” Toney
said. “He came from a wealthy family
and he built this house to impress
his friends and neighbors.”
A piano, a fireplace, a table for tea
and chairs are the only items placed
in the parlor room.
“At the time, tea cost $70 per
pound,” Toney said. So if you were
invited for a cup, you were most
likely very prominent in society.”
The dining room is furnished in
mahogany with a table placed to
serve two.
The bedrooms are simple and are
furnished with a bed, a table and
perhaps a mirror.
Gamble’s office is separate from
the main home so workers could
access it from an exterior entryway.
A standing desk and a larger desk
with a chair, along with a map, a few
books and some paper were the
only tools Gamble needed to run
his business.
