COLLEGE INTERNSHIPS A bridge to careers in the as Summer internships are the bridge that connects education to careers for college students. Internships provide handson experience, strengthen students’ resumes, and are integral to graduate school applications. At many universities, students feel immense pressure to get the best possible internship, although they are not always affordable. 18% of internship opportunities available on OffstageJobs.com (a commonlyused website for theatre employment opportunities) are unpaid. 62% receive a stipend, which is often less than $1000 for the entire summer. Imagine stretching less than $1,000 over three months to include housing, living expenses, and savings for continuing your education. TNP’s investment in the next generation includes resetting the bar for theatre internships and through the generosity of our community provides a stipend as well as free housing to its interns. TNP’s mission of “Theatre for the Community” includes providing opportunities to students, not putting a further burden on them. We are proud to be a part of the 20% of 2017 summer internships that made their programs affordable for students by providing a livable stipend and housing. In the intensely busy environment of theatre, it’s easy to let a great opportunity pass by. But missing great opportunities is not in the playbook of Production Stage Manager and Internship Program Coordinator Cole Butcher and long time volunteer coordinator (now happily retired) Becky Troop. Approached in 2014 by two students who were interested in an internship, Cole and Becky were able to quickly put together a summer internship program that received glowing reviews from the interns and staff alike. After the success of the initial program, Cole went to work redesigning the program to support and train interns in all aspects of theatre including lighting, stage management and costume and set design. 60
