It was another stellar season for the Tigers, who steamrolled through the District and easily won both Region matches before being upended by State runnerup Miami Gulliver Prep in the opening round (quarterfi nals) of the new format at the State Tournament. At the District Tournament, Jesuit won every match to capture all fi ve singles positions and No. 1 doubles, defeating Tampa Catholic, Robinson, Lakewood, and several other schools to claim the team title for the 22nd time in 23 seasons under head coach Joe Curtis. Jimmy Emslie ’18 earned automatic berths to State with victories at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, with partner Sebastian Solano ’20. Solano won at No. 2 singles, Thomas Lahart ’20 at No. 3, Gunther Mosesmann ’18 at No. 4, and Ramon Martinez ’19 at No. 5. JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • FALL 2017 23 The Tigers, under 3rd-year head coach Miguel Menendez, were nationally ranked for much of the season, capturing the District for the 6th straight year, the Region for the 6th time in the past 8 seasons, and advancing to the State Tournament for the 20th time in program history. Pitching, defense, and top-to-bottom hitting led the Tigers to a 7-0 win over Dunedin in the Class 6A State Semifi nal. In the championship game, despite a sterling effort from starter Jeff Hakanson ’17 (3-1, 1.42 ERA), the Tigers fell 5-1 to Archbishop McCarthy. Jack Anderson ’18 (7 wins, 0.79 ERA, 78 K, 70 IP) paced the pitching staff, CF Joel Brewer ’18 (.391 avg., team-high 16 SB) and SS McGuire Weaver ’18 (team-high .400 avg) sparked the top of the order, and 3B Thomas Bencivenga ’17 had 5 HRs. Recap SPRING SPORTS Baseball won the Saladino Tournament Tennis was District Champion for the 22nd time in 23 seasons BASEBALL LACROSSE The Tigers, under fi rst-year coach Ryan Henry, had an 11-game win streak and were ranked in the Top 20 in the State for much of the season. Jesuit fi nished with a 14-3 record and captured multiple awards, including Brad Baker ’17 (39g, 35a), who signed with Holy Cross, being named an All-American by the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of American Lacrosse, and Jake Lemon ’18 (46g, 19a) selected as the Tampa Bay area Boys Lacrosse Athlete of the Year by Spectrum Sports. Goalie Will Sands ’17 was the Defensive MVP, and Nick Mastro ’17, who signed with Marymount College, earned the Coach’s Award. Seth Cashen ’18 tied with Mastro for the team lead with 16 takeaways, and Cade Myers ’19 led with 32 ground balls, and Ethan Dieck won 59.4% of faceoffs. Ryan Cox ’17 scored 34 goals TENNIS Shane Eilers ’17 TRACK & FIELD The Tigers, under 8th-year head coach Andy Wood, engaged in a thrilling District meet showdown with Hillsborough High before placing second. Jesuit has fi nished in the top two in the District every season under Wood. Sixteen Tigers advanced to the Region Meet, including individual District champions Bradley Haines ’17 (shot put), Justas Schillinger ’17 (high jump), Royal Doolittle ’17 (triple jump), and John Robbins ’18 (2-mile), as well Jack Henry Nouss ’17, Sean Hughes ’18, and Connor Rouge ’17, who placed 2nd-3rd-4th in the pole vault. Three Tigers advanced to the 3A State Meet - Doolittle, Hughes, and high jumper Aidan Swanson - with Doolittle claiming the highest spot with a 5th-place fi nish for his triple jump of 45-feet, 6-inches.
