Life on Himes Life on Himes Briefs MASTERS EARNS 10K AWARD Jackson Masters ’17, president of Jesuit’s Peer Ministers and a Varsity football player, was awarded a $10,000 college scholarship by Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla. Masters, a freshman at Florida State, was one of four winners chosen from more than 100 nominees across the region. STUDENT COUNCIL After the school-wide election in April, Tyler Peterson ’18 was named Jesuit’s Student Council president for the 2017-18 school year. The VP is Bradley Haines ’18, secretary is James Bencivenga ’19, and treasurer is Carter Collins ’18. Tyler Peterson ’18 Bradley Haines ’18 CLASS ACHIEVERS The top students in Class Achievement in the spring 2017 semester were: Brice Sewell ’17 (4 First Honors), Sam Sands ’18 (4 First Honors, 2 Second Honors), Andrew Hanna ’19 (5 First Honors, 1 Second Honors), Nick Muir ’19 (5 First Honors, 1 Second Honors), and Spencer Farfante ’20 (6 First Honors, 1 Second Honors). Each semester, the highest achieving student in each class section receives First Honors, and the second-highest receives Second Honors. 16 JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • FALL 2017 ANNE FRANK AWARD Kyle Erickson ‘18 was honored at Convocation on April 26 as Jesuit’s recipient of the 2017 Anne Frank Humanitarian Award by the Florida Holocaust Museum. Erickson was chosen in part because of his exceptional record of community service, notably with Jesuit’s Key Club. He was chosen president of Key Club for 2017-18, and in the spring at the state Key Club awards, Erickson was honored as the Distinguished Class Editor for all of Florida. NATIONAL MERIT Joshua Cruz ’18 and Matthew Tamashiro ’18 earned National Merit Semifi nalist recognition this fall, and 12 other Tigers scored in the 99th percentile of the PSAT: Patrick Eberly, Jack Giannetti, Eric Irani, Hyoung Kim, Eric Navar, Diego Perez, Tommy Pham, Sam Sands, James Sheridan, Luke Surak, Nicholas Verdugo, and Jordan Vivero. Tamashiro also was featured in the Tampa Bay Times for achieving a perfect ACT score. Sam Sands ’18 KEEPING IT CLEAN The Environmental Club pitched in to help make the planet a little better April 22 on Earth Day, as club moderator Vindri Gajadhar and 10 club members cleared waste in Al Lopez Park, fi lling more than 60 giant garbage bags. On Sept. 16, as part of the Coastal Cleanup in the wake of Hurricane Irma, club members spent a Saturday cleaning up McKay Bay Nature Park, wading through the mangroves to gather reams of bottles, cups, and more.
