American-Canadian baritone Michael Nyby, lauded for his “stentorian m a s c u l i n i t y ” and “natural and c o m m a n d i n g stage presence,” is establishing himself on concert and opera stages in both the United States and Canada.  He is particularly known for his strong performances of Carmina Burana, which have been praised for “incredible control and command of his tender and rich baritone.” Nyby recently performed this work with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony, Thunder Bay Symphony and Mendelssohn Choir of Toronto. This great Orff work marks his debut with The Florida Orchestra. An especially sought-after interpreter of new music, Nyby has created the roles of William Dale in Silent THE FLORIDA ORCHESTRA | 2017-2018 Night for the Minnesota Opera, Brent Colgate in Georgia Bottoms for the Huntsville Alabama Symphony and Seth in Isis and Osiris for Toronto’s VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert. On the concert stage, his premieres include Scott Wheeler’s 200 Dreams from Captivity and Larysa Kuzmenko’s Golden Harvest. Other recent highlights include Bummerli in Oscar Straus’ The Chocolate Soldier for Toronto Operetta Theatre, Messiah with the Winnipeg Symphony, Dandini in La Cenerentola with Edmonton Opera, Schaunard in La boheme with the Windsor Symphony and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs at the Washington National Cathedral. Nyby has performed under the baton of conductors such as Michael Christie, Anne Manson, Antony Walker, Robert Tweten, Stephen Lord, and Will Crutchfield. He has appeared with Vancouver Opera, Toronto’s Opera Atelier and the Caramoor Festival. An alumnus of Ithaca College in New York and the University of British Columbia, he was a member of the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice program and a resident artist at Minnesota Opera.
