NEW NATIVE PLANT INTRODUCTIONS Trillium Gardens Nursery in Tallahassee has introduced 19 native wildflowers to our listings in 2017. Most of these are great pollinator attractors. A few have a very restricted range and five are endangered in Florida. Several of these plants have a much broader range to other states north of Florida. Whenever possible, ask for local ecotypes to protect and benefit from local biodiversity. Ask for Native Ecotypes: Always ask about the origin of the plants you purchase. Many native species have a wide geographic range but great genetic diversity in local populations adapted over time to local conditions. Local plants of the same species can perform better in Florida’s unique humidity, photoperiod and soils. Many native nurseries specialize in growing plants from locally collected seed. Responsible nurseries can tell you where their plants come from.
