Healthy Choices September is Healthy Aging Month It is never too late to re-invent yourself by taking control of your health. September is Healthy Aging Month, a national observance intended to focus attention on the positive aspects of aging. All of us, regardless of age, can find ways to increase our chances of healthy aging. Be positive • Positive thinking can go a long way toward feeling better about you. Have a positive attitude about yourself and life in general. • Use positive talk, and do positive things. Practice changing your negative thoughts and words into something positive. This won’t happen overnight, so practice every chance you get. When you catch yourself complaining, put whatever it is into perspective. Your headache might be someone else’s joy. • Distance yourself from those who are negative. Surround yourself with positive people who will build you up, not tear you down. • Smile! Research shows people who smile more often are happier. Plus, you will spread happiness to those around you. 02 MyClearwater Stay active, balanced and maintain posture • Exercise on a daily basis to keep a strong and healthy mind and body. • Vary your activity. Exercises like Tai Chi, yoga and Pilates can improve your flexibility and balance. Good balance, strength and flexibility can help prevent falls as we age. • Walk like a vibrant, healthy person. Wear good, supportive shoes, hold your head high, walk tall and straight and wear a big confident smile. Something simple like changing your posture can change your whole attitude. Stay social • Make time for family and friends. Go out and do things that you enjoy. Social connectedness can improve quantity and quality of life. If you want to make new friends with common interests, try something new like music lessons, pickleball, etc. You can meet new people, do something you love and build your intellectual wellness by mastering a new skill. • Put your phone or other interactive electronics down, turn off the TV and have a conversation with a loved one. If the person is not with you, call instead of text. Hearing a voice on the other end of the phone is much more personal than back and forth finger typing. • Give back by volunteering. Studies show doing for others enhances our purpose in life and often makes people feel more fulfilled.
