This revered community tradition features distinguished offerings from artists, galleries and collectors who generously support the Fine Arts Work Center’s fellowship program for emerging artists and writers. As proposed NEA and NEH cuts loom, the theme of this year’s Auction is “Art Matters.” Featured Auction Artists are Tabitha Vevers, Elspeth Halvorsen and Tony Vevers, a beloved family of Provincetown artists. A centerpiece of the Auction will be “VEVERS3 /Object Lesson” curated by artist/ photographer Daniel Ranalli. Hailed for her intricate and dreamlike paintings, Tabitha’s work highlights her feminist engagement with tradition and myth, coexisting with the forces of nature. Her father, Tony Vevers, a highly respected painter and art historian, is a refugee from the Abstract Expressionist New York movement whose contributions to the art world are legendary. Sculptor and assembler Elspeth Halvorsen creates box constructions that utilize symbolic elements to create visual statements often about her response to global events. This exhibition will be the first time the family has shown together since 2009. VEVERS3 opens Friday, August 4, 6-8 pm and continues through August 20. The Art Auction Preview opens Friday, August 11, 5-7 pm. Other exhibition highlights are “Manos/ Prodanou: Artists’ Choices” May 26 through July 3 and features the work of distinguished Magnum photographer, Constantine Manos and his partner of 50 years, artist Michael Prodanou. Paul Resika, a former student of Hans Hofmann and American painter of international stature, will be honored at the Work Center’s Summer Awards Celebration on July 8. His exhibition “Resika: Recent Paintings” opens that evening and continues through July 30. The Summer Awards Celebration, the Work Center’s most widely attended fund raiser, is Saturday, July 8. Other honorees include Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel and Emmy award-winning Director Ryan Murphy. The Work Center offers summer workshops in creative writing and visual arts, weekly readings and artist talks, free and open to the pubic.
