was doing play by play for Auburn University. “I always wanted to do this. Even as a child,” he said. Barney worked at WCOV-TV and radio in Montgomery, Alabama, as Assistant Sports Director and anchored the 10:00 sports at the TV station. When he moved to Griffin, Georgia, to work at WKEU, he found it easy to connect with the kids who called into the station during his talk show. Kids didn’t want to argue politics or demand everyone believe what they 14 Toombs County Magazine believe before they can love them. They hadn’t yet learned to stress about things beyond their control. They just wanted to talk about simple things like their sports games and what they were thinking at the moment. He doesn’t apologize when he says that what kids have to say is more interesting than the things adults want to talk about. “Kids live a more interesting life,” said Barney. “Adults just work and complain about politics.” I suppose he was right, but I wasn’t ever quite sure when Barney was joking. “Aren’t you afraid a child will say something embarrassing on the radio?” I asked. Another look of amusement. “No. That only happens with adults; trust me,” he said. For the past ten years, Barney has been bringing sports and radio together as the sports commentator at Y101, a local radio station in Lyons. Toombs County sports fans rely on Barney for his play-by-play commentary on Barney takes calls during his radio show from numerous characters and several regulars like Meredith Durden. She calls in on her way to school every morning and gives updates about “everything” including the sports she plays like softball (RIGHT).
