But even in homes where there is good communication, children need the community to reinforce this message. It’s not easy to get the attention of teenagers these days, but the Vidalia Comprehensive High School Drama Team did just that. The performing arts are a powerful tool that can help portray a message of truth that a lecture cannot. When officers from the Lyons Police Department burst into the room, chaos and panic swept through the room. But the next scene really brought it home. (Girls and boys were divided). Outside, each group was met by the sounds of a blaring ambulance siren. The teenagers watched as EMTs, a Jaws of life crew, and police officers desperately worked to free the passengers who had tried to escape arrest at the party from a wrecked vehicle. A mother, portrayed by another volunteer, screamed for her unresponsive child in the wreckage. There’s a good reason why those who serve our community held nothing back in their dramatic reenactment: They’ve seen it. They’ve been there. They’ve watched the unthinkable happen. And seeing the sheet pulled over one child who was in the wrong place at the wrong time was more than enough to make each of them want to do anything and everything possible to wake kids up and make them think. “We want to get their attention,” said
