Lucretia Nobles, Hardy Thomas and John Adams cut the cake during the Lyons Lions Club 70th Anniversary celebration. Director. Herman I. Jones, the owner of the Jitney Jungle, a local grocery store located in what is now Hornbuckles, became the 2nd Vice President. I. G. Clark was the 3rd Vice President and sold real estate. The Secretary was F. Rudolph Embree. His profession was listed as agriculture. David E. Randall, owner of Randall Cleaners, was the Treasurer. The cleaners was located behind the old bank building at the corner of SE Broad Street and Lanier Street, across from what is now the Lyons City Hall. J. Emory Price was the first Lion Tamer and sold used cars. “The first ‘Tail Twister’ was Dorris E. Stanley, whose profession was listed as ‘Retail Autos.’ He was also the coowner of Stanley-Pughsley Cotton Gin. Ironically, Hardy Thomas, our present Tail Twister, later acquired both that cotton gin and the job as Tail Twister from Stanley. “Our first four directors were J. W. McArthur, a banker; W. K. McNatt, who owned the McNatt Freezer Lockers; J. M. Patterson, listed as a line foreman for the REA, later to become Altamaha EMC, but more famously known as the father of current Lion member Jackie Patterson Alexander; and Melvin Page, who learned the retail dry goods business from his parents at their store in Vidalia and opened Page’s Department Store in Lyons. “Herman Jones was made the Chairman of the Membership Committee, and James D. Pate, a hotel operator, was put in charge of finance. We don’t know much about Mr. Pate, but possibly he could have been the owner or an employee of the New Lyons Hotel and thus been instrumental in getting the club to begin holding their meetings there,” said Larry. In those early years, club records listed many services the Lyons Lions Club provided to those in need including paying for eye exams, glasses, and purchasing stock in the Toombs County Athletic Association to help with a new athletic field. “We really supported athletics in the 50’s,” said Larry. “We had a high school banquet for Lyons 110 Toombs County Magazine
