The challenge Mrs. Parker provided Oren made her his choice for Star Teacher. “I chose Mrs. Parker because she’s helped me in so many ways, and pushed me beyond my comfort zone,” he said. But Mrs. Parker’s approach was also a personal quest for Oren. Although he played rec ball when he was young, he had had virtually no experience in school athletics. “I played percussion in the band all through middle school,” said Oren. He also received the Marching Band Most Outstanding Percussionist in 2013. In 9th grade, he took up wrestling. One of the main reasons for the change was simply because it was something he’d never done before. “The first three or four weeks, I was miserable. I would get killed at practice every day.” His misery continued through two seasons of wrestling. “When it finally clicked, and I could tell myself, ‘I’m not the worst kid in the room anymore,’ it became fun.” From 2014 to 2017, Oren served as Captain of the Wrestling Team. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP Oren considered public speaking a challenge, but Literary gave him the opportunity to face it. In 9th grade, Oren took up wrestling because it was something he’d never done before.
