passion for American figurative sculpture are second to none.” “For me,” continued Zullo, “traveling to Brookgreen Gardens is as a golfer traveling to Augusta National. There is no greater aspiration than to be included in its permanent collection. Simply the top of my bucket list. Knowing my work is included with the likes of Anna Hyatt Huntington’s and so many of America's best sculptors makes it easy to sleep at night.“ Other artists echo Zullo’s feelings about Brookgreen Gardens. Renowned sculptor Glenna Goodacre, when asked what Brookgreen meant to her, wrote, “Brookgreen is very important to me. It is heaven for a sculptor, and there is much for an artist to learn there. I am proud to have had my work shown in exhibitions at Brookgreen, but I never dreamed one of my large works, like Pledge Allegiance, would be included in the permanent collection.” Goodacre has three other works in the collection plus a large-scale sculpture, The Water Bearers, that is on long-term loan. Walter Matia, whose American Foxhounds, three other sculptures, and 12 medals are part of the permanent collection, recently said, “. . . what an important resource the Gardens are to living sculptors. There is no better place to get a sense of the overall history of representational sculptural thought. The outdoor collections, now enhanced by the open stacks in the Offner Center, are one of the two or three best places in the country to see not only artists’ premier pieces, but also a more comprehensive look at a larger body of their work. You never know where inspiration for a new piece will spring, but I never leave Brookgreen without a balance of excitement, wonder, and humility.” The pride that sculptors feel in having their work represented in Brookgreen Gardens’ collection and its role as a living history of American figurative sculpture is complemented by the important programs that Brookgreen offers for sculptors. Through the Martha Wallace Pellett Master Sculptor Program, nationally-recognized American sculptors enjoy residencies to work at Brookgreen, teach sculpture workshops for talented students from across the country, and present public lectures and sculpture demonstrations to Brookgreen’s members and visitors. Brookgreen also hosts a series of sculpture exhibits each year featuring major works of contemporary sculpture, most notably the National Sculpture Society Annual Awards Exhibition, for which Brookgreen Gardens is the exclusive venue of this selection of outstanding contemporary sculpture with a wide range of subjects and media. As we walk through our gardens, let us never take for granted the wonder of it all and the immense treasure that the Huntingtons left for the world, right in our own backyard. “Brookgreen is very important to me. It is heaven for a sculptor, and there is much for an artist to learn there.” Glenna Goodacre Attendees of the 2017 Friends Fine Art Auction enjoying the works of Glenna Goodacre
