very rewarding for students, staff , and community. “I think the great values for the students have come in learning teamwork across disciplines and the quality required to accurately represent the story of Brookgreen,” she said. “For the community, we hope the gift of wonderful music as presented by Ron and the students honors Brookgreen and its role in our community’s past and present.” Faculty advisor Matt White, Ph.D., added, “We often segment these experiences, but in this case, for a group of students to go from the artist collaboration, to the music study, composing, arranging, rehearsing, recording, and production, Squirrel, for 6- to 8-yearolds, will debut during the Brookgreen Art Festival on June 3 and 4. Our partnership with Maryville Elementary School through the Brookgreen Buddies Mentoring Program has enriched the local community since its inception in 2004. Staff members and volunteers meet with selected students on a bi-weekly basis to provide academic, social, and emotional support for their mentees. According to Assistant Principal Scott Batton, “Th e Brookgreen program has allowed a safe setting for students to talk and interact with someone besides their teachers. Th e mentors bring many interesting life experiences and ideas to share with our students. Th e Brookgreen Buddies program has also opened up the world of Brookgreen Gardens to some students who otherwise would not have ever visited.” MES 1st grade teacher Sherry Poston added, “So often children are seen but not heard.
