After serving in the US Air Force for three years, he entered Kansas State, where he played baseball. After graduating in 1951, he taught school and coached in Kansas and Delaware for many years, and spent summers playing baseball for Orleans back in the town team years; he and his older brother Dave were members of the renowned 1954 team which competed in the National Baseball Congress Tournament in Wichita, Kansas. When Bob and his wife Dottie returned to Orleans full time, he worked at Goose Hummock and then Ocean Edge until his retirement. Along with other town team alum, he was a regular on the bench outside the post office, greeting his many friends and talking baseball. Dick Marr MARCH 11, 1936 - NOVEMBER 11, 2016 The Firebirds join the Cape League in marking the passing of former Commissioner Dick Marr, who devoted his life to learning, teaching, coaching, mentoring, and creating opportunities for his students. Dick was a graduate of The Governor’s Academy, Williams College, and Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English. While at Williams, he was an All-East hockey goaltender and varsity baseball player. At Milton Academy, Dick taught English and served as hockey and baseball coach, dorm master and director of admissions and financial aid. At Tabor Academy, he was dean of students and the first girls’ hockey and softball coach, and he also headed Tabor’s speech and debate programs. In 1995, he was inducted into the Massachusetts High School Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame; he also served as supervisor of ice hockey officials for the ECAC and Hockey East. After retiring from Tabor, Dick returned to baseball, working with the Cape League as its commissioner. He then earned a JD degree from Roger Williams School of Law, and served as an investigator and mediator for local courts. Dick and his wife Ginny spent winters in North Carolina, and he assisted with the men’s hockey teams at both Duke and UNC until his death. Jeremy Spencer Linn Walters JANUARY 26, 2000 - OCTOBER 6, 2016 Although Jeremy’s life was tragically short, it was filled to the brim with love, countless friendships, e n t h u s i a s t i c learning, and seeking out new experiences. A junior at Nauset High School, Jeremy possessed a keen and curious intellect, and while he particularly favored history and American Sign Language, he researched new topics constantly. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, and had added wilderness adventures to his skill set. He had begun voice lessons and willingly shared his talent, to the delight of his family. Jeremy faced many challenges in his life, beginning with his premature birth, and he worked ceaselessly to overcome the impact of Aspergers on his life. Though he was always surrounded by boundless love and support, severe depression was a relentless foe. Because of his kind and generous nature, Jeremy’s spirit lives on, not just in those who loved him, but in the lives he saved through organ donation. Jeremy leaves his mom and dad, Kimberely Mead-Walters and Davis Walters, his brothers Kyle and Sam, his sister Maddie, and his German Shepherd, Mike Wazowski. Along with other family members, he also leaves the many summer brothers that the family hosted for the Firebirds over the years, including a very special one, Jason Wheeler, who became his brother-in-law. A scholarship fund has been established in Jeremy’s name. Kindly submit donations to the Jeremy Walters Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of: The Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, PO Box 86, Orleans, MA, 02653.
