T he Jesuit High School Key Club once • Distinguished Class Editor – again was recognized as the state’s best at the annual District Convention for Florida Key Clubs on April 1 in Orlando. Jesuit was honored as one of just seven Key Clubs, from among hundreds across Florida, to earn Distinguished Club of the Year. And earning the highest individual honor, the 2016-17 Key Clubber of The Year for the Florida Key Club, from among more than 2,000 student members at the convention, was Jesuit’s Gabriel Brown ’17. 8 JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • SPRING 2017 Also, the Lieutenant Governor of Key Club for Florida District 14B will again be a Jesuit student, as Thomas Turner ’19 will succeed Joe McGonnigal ’18. Led by moderator Amy Martin, Key Club brought home a total of 67 awards at the convention for its year in service to the community and school, including: • Distinguished Class President – Justas Schillinger ’17 • Distinguished Class Secretary – Gabriel Brown ’17 Kyle Erickson ’18 • Governor’s Citation Award for Excellence in Service • Club Project Display – 2nd Place – Spencer Wallace ’17 • Club Scrapbook – 2nd Place – Kyle Erickson ’18 • Club Video – 3rd Place – Jack Henry Nouss ’17 • Single Service Award – 3rd Place – Brice Sewell ’17 - Reach out and Read Service Project Forty seven members of Jesuit High School’s Pro-Life Club made the club’s annual trek to Washington, D.C. in late January to support the rights of the unborn at the March for Life. Led by school president Fr. Richard C. Hermes, S.J., the Jesuit students joined hundreds of thousands of marchers on Jan. 27, heading from the National Mall right up to the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court as part of the largest pro-life demonstration in On the March the world. The event marked the 44th year since the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling regarding abortion. The amazing four-day pilgrimage was fi lled with educational and spiritual experiences, including visits to: the International Holocaust Memorial Museum; Georgetown University, the nation’s oldest Jesuit university (1789); St. Matthew’s Cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington; Gettysburg National Military Park, site of the historic Civil War battle; and Mount St. Mary’s University, where they celebrated Mass at Immaculate Conception Chapel. The Jesuit group also celebrated Mass with students from other Jesuit schools around the country prior to the March for Life, listened to lecturers at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, celebrated the Mass for the Unborn at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception at Catholic University, and Compline at the Dominican House of Studies.
