SOCCER JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • SPRING 2017 19 Recap WINTER SPORTS The Tigers, led by head coach Neal Goldman, captured the District crown for the 6th straight year, defeating Spoto in the title game, before being upended in the Region Quarterfi nal by Sarasota Booker to fi nish the season 22-5, including 10-0 against District competition. Jesuit traveled to Atlanta for the 8-team St. Pius X Christmas Tournament and defeated Jesuit New Orleans to earn 3rd place. G Stevie Darst ’17, who signed with Loyola New Orleans, led the Tigers with team-highs of 16.6 ppg, 5.5 apg, 3.4 spg, and 85% free throws. Darst netted a career-high 39 points in the Region Quarterfi nal. Other top contributors included G Thierry Moliere ’18 (11.4 ppg, 3.9 apg, 1.9 spg, 37% 3-pointers), C Will Anderson ’17 (teamhighs of 6.0 rpg and 2.0 bpg), F Lucas Uzdavinis ’17 (11.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg, team-high 40% 3-pointers), and F Tyson Dunn (10.5 ppg, 1.4 spg, 37% 3-pointers). The Tigers, led by head coach Sal Basile, captured four individual District titles – William McGill ’19 (113), Matt Daner ’17 (126), Patrick Eberly ’18 (170), and Eli Davenport ’18 (195) – and had four other wrestlers advance to the Region Tournament: District runners-up Ethan Basile ’20 (132) and Miguel Coste ’19 (138), and 3rd-place fi nishers Alfonso Vargas ’20 (106), and Austin Smith ’17 (152). Region placers Daner (2nd), Basile (2nd), and Davenport (3rd) all advanced to the State Tournament, where Basile and Daner won their fi rst two matches to advance to the semifi nals before Basile wound up 4th and Daner 6th. Basile capped off a sensational freshman year by placing second in his weight class at the NHSCA national freshman wrestling tournament in March in Virginia, and being named 1st-team All-Tampa Bay by the Tampa Bay Times. Stevie Darst ’17 Ethan Basile ’20 Royce Pope ’17 BASKETBALL WRESTLING The Tigers, led by head coach Eric Sims ’95, captured the District title for 31st time in the past 33 seasons and advanced to play Merritt Island in the Region Final for the 4th straight season. Jesuit’s quest for a 2nd straight State berth came up short in a 10-round shootout defeat to Merritt Island to fi nish the season 20-7-1. Royce Pope ’17 (22g, 20a), Tim Gyenis ’17 (0.85 gaa), and Benny Ortiz ’17 (27 g, 10a) were chosen for the Hillsborough Pinellas all-star game, and Ortiz scored the game’s only goal while Gyenis was named MVP. Ortiz (1st team), Noah Kurtz ’18 (2nd team), Pope (3rd team) and Gyenis (HM) were named to the All-Tampa Bay team by the Tampa Bay Times, and other top players included midfi elder Diego Yepez ’18 (7g, 9a), defenders Justin Raab ’17, Andrew Motzer ’19, and J.P. Collins ’17, and forwards Zach Board ’20 (10g, 10a) and Lucas Gobea ’20 (7g, 4a).
