Dunn, the civil engineer overseeing construction of the railway line through Dunn, connecting Wilson to Fayetteville. The town was laid out in 1886 around the new railroad tracks. Today, Dunn has one of the largest downtowns in the area. The Dunn Commercial Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
