For this issue of The Foothills Times, I would like to review one of my favorite childhood books. The book that started it all for me was Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech. It sparked my love of reading and my desire for written adventures when I was still in elementary school. Before this book, I hadn’t found a love of reading, because no story had ever captured my imagination like Ruby Holler. I was recently cleaning out my overly-full bookshelves to donate reading it. Wow, how the years have changed the characters in the story for me. The story follows twin orphans as they are passed from home to home but are always returned because they are troublemakers. This much less trouble than everyone thinks. The story then follows them and their adventures living in Ruby Holler with this lovely older couple. I must admit that even to this day the adventure is fun and made my heart warm. me for many different reasons. Now rereading it, I see so much more in the characters and the quirks of the book. Though this was a children’s book that captured my heart so many years ago, I was happy to have reread it today and was able to see the characters through older eyes. I encourage you to look back on some of the books you have read in your life that have just left the little mark on you and give it another read. You may be surprised at how much it has changed and how different the story is reading it years later. Happy reading, Foothills! Some things never change: Trees are meant to be climbed no matter what decade children are born in. Photo by Kathleen Loveland 63 www.foothillstimes.com
