Gasparilla Island has beautiful weather for so many months out of the year, it has allowed our tennis enthusiasts to virtually play any time they want ... this leads to some very healthy competition. Peak tennis season in Boca Grande is fueled by participants from three tennis clubs, as well as players from the public courts on Wheeler Street owned by Lee County Parks and Recreation. In a nutshell, we have a lot of active tennis players to pull from for the island tournaments. The Boca Beacon sponsors the Gasparilla Island Tennis Classic, and 2017 was its most successful year so far. As an example, the men’s open doubles finals had more than 90 spectators watching the match. The winners of the 2017 Gasparilla Island Tennis Classic were: • Open mixed doubles: Sparky Christakos and Jane Shanely over Walter and Ann Beatty • Men's singles: Grant Toney over Walter Beatty • Ladies singles: Jordan Ittersagen over Julie Sparks • Men's open doubles : Walter Beatty and Jeff Corkhill over Perry Smiley and Grant Toney • Ladies open doubles: Jordan and Tamara Ittersagen over Jane Shanley and Stephanie Firman • Men's 70+ doubles: Dave Maxwell and Walter Beatty over Chuck Hemm and Steve Bernstein The Boca Grande Club is the host of the annual pro tennis exhibition series, played January through March. The competition takes place every Wednesday afternoon at the Boca Grande Club at 4 p.m. There is a women series and men's series of doubles play. 74 GASPARILLA ISLAND March/April 2017 By Dusty Hopkins Photos by Dusty and H.
