In this hurried world, it's easy to forget that there are people who require a little more personalized assistance to help them reach their natural potential and thrive as individuals. Walking, speaking and other kinds of communication can be daunting daily tasks for some. Loveland Village in Venice, Fla. has been providing assistance in learning life skills and other educational opportunities for folks seeking to learn and master new skills so that they can independently succeed on their own. Formerly known as Loveland Center, the campus was founded in 1962 by a group of parents in the area who met in a church meeting room and took it upon themselves to create a non-profit organization that would help fill the gap for young adults with developmental disabilities. The organization has grown from helping a handful of clients to serving more than 200 on a daily basis today. It still provides services for a few students who were helped by the facility when it first opened. In 1964 the facility was transformed into a fully incorporated business. “We went from being an informal program in a church to having an executive director and then a board March/April 2017 GASPARILLA ISLAND 61
